LTA Youth Green is the final stage of mini-tennis before transitioning to standard yellow ball tennis on a full-sized court. Designed for children typically aged 9 to 10, it refines the technical and tactical skills developed in previous stages while playing on a full-size court.
Key features
Age group: Predominantly for children aged 9 and 10 born in 2016 & 2017
Court size: Played on a full-size tennis court for both singles and doubles, a key difference from the smaller courts of Red and Orange stages.
Net height: The net is at its full standard height
Red Ball LTA Youth description
LTA Youth Red Ball is an introductory level of mini-tennis for children aged 8 and under, designed to make learning the game fun and accessible. It is played with specialized equipment and rules that are tailored to the physical development of young players.
Key features
Age group: For children aged 8 and under.
Court size: Played on a smaller, badminton-sized court measuring 11m x 5.5m.
Equipment: Uses shorter rackets (17–23 inches) and softer balls that bounce lower, making it easier to control. A sponge ball is used for indoor play, and a felt ball for outdoors.
Net height: The net is lower than a standard tennis net, at a height of 80cm.
Gameplay and scoring: Red Ball introduces kids to serving, rallying, and scoring. The format gives players the opportunity to engage in longer rallies and practice a variety of shots. Simple numbered scoring is often used, with matches frequently structured as a "first-to-10-points" tie-break.
Learning focus: The emphasis is on developing fundamental skills like balance, agility, coordination, movement, and hand-eye coordination through fun games. Competition is often relaxed and team-based, with the LTA encouraging values like sportsmanship.
The LTA Youth Red Ball stage is the second step in the LTA's junior progression pathway, following the "Blue Stage" for ages 3–5, and preceding the "Orange Ball" stage for ages 8–9.

Orange Ball LTA Youth Description
LTA Youth Orange Ball
is the next step in the LTA's junior tennis program, designed for children aged 8 to 9. Building on the basic skills from the Red Ball stage, Orange Ball introduces more advanced tactics and techniques on a slightly larger court with a faster ball.
Key features
Age group: Primarily for children aged 8 and 9.
Court size: Played on an enlarged court, which is still smaller than a full-sized court. For singles, the court is 18m x 6.5m.
Equipment:
Ball: A low-compression orange ball is used. It is 50% slower than a standard yellow ball and bounces lower, giving players better control and more time to hit shots.
Racket: Players typically use slightly larger rackets, recommended at 58cm to 63cm (23–25 inches).
Net height: The net is set at 80cm (31 inches), the same height as for the Red Ball stage.
Skill development: The orange stage focuses on developing tactical awareness, problem-solving, and a wider variety of shots. Children learn to serve overarm and return, and participate in longer rallies.
Competition: Friendly competition is encouraged, with matches introducing scoring and the concepts of singles and doubles play. For instance, a match might consist of a best-of-three-sets format, with each set being a seven-point tie-break.
Pathway: After mastering the Orange Ball stage, children progress to the Green Ball stage (ages 9–10) before moving to a full-sized court with standard yellow balls.
